PETALING JAYA: "My mother said It is difficult to be a Sabahan in Peninsular Malaysia", said a woman in a TikTok video as she lamented the high airfares.
The video, shared by @lobakmerahmy on TikTok, shows a woman holding back tears as she relates her experience of missing a transit flight to Sabah.
The woman said she usually flies from Penang to Kota Kinabalu but tickets for the route were sold out due to Hari Raya and she had to transit in Kuala Lumpur instead.
Her original flight ticket, which included a return flight, cost RM800.
She said due to delays in the flight from Penang, she missed the connecting flight to Sabah.
"When I touched down in KL, I knew I had missed my flight," she said, adding that she was crying on her flight from Penang.
When she tried to book a new ticket, the cheapest one-way fare available was RM641, with other options costing above RM1,000.
"I felt guilty because the original ticket costs RM800 for two ways," she said.
This comes amidst the issue of high airfares and shortage of flights due to the Hari Raya season.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Tuesday (April 18) that the ministry will continue to look for solutions to control and reduce the ticket prices for flights between the peninsula and the Borneo States.
He acknowledged ticket prices were exorbitant and said steps had been taken to increase flight capacity.
