Affordable Raya clothes

PASIR GUDANG: Some clothing stores are selling Hari Raya attire at reasonably low prices.

Boutique owner Mazlilah Tukiman, who responded to the government’s call by participating in the Baju Raya Rahmah initiative, said the programme could reduce the financial burden of couples with a big family.

“People are more frugal with their spending in this economic climate and will only buy what is needed,” she said.

Recognising that baju raya may not be on the list of essential items for the B40 community, Mazlilah decided to put together a family package for the group so that they could celebrate the festival wearing brand new clothes.

The package is priced at RM149 for four sets of clothing – two for parents and two for children, a boy and a girl each.

“I have prepared close to 3,000 packages, and the response has been good so far.

“Most of my customers are parents with more than one child; some of them have thanked me for the affordable family package,” said the 47-year-old owner of Koleksi Ziella here.

In response to a question whether there was profit in selling the bundle, Mazlilah said her main purpose is to help those in need.

“There are ups and downs in business, and to me, the most important thing is that I am able to provide help to the needy.

“I ensure every item in my store is made from breathable fabric and is of high quality. Observe that I’m wearing it myself,” she said while displaying her baju kurung during the interview.

Sharing the same view is Manjalara Fashion Design owner Nur Fildza Ezleen Salimi, 23, who has set aside a number of baju kurung for the B40 group at RM15 each.

“I want to help those who cannot afford to buy new clothes for Hari Raya.

“Nowadays, a set of baju raya can easily cost up to RM200; not everyone can afford this,” she added.

On her other products, Nur Fildza said the clothes in her shop came in limited quantity.

“So they are not just cheap but exclusive, too,” she added.

Jakel Trading’s managing director Nazaruddin Kassim said the company had allocated more than 50,000 sets of Baju Raya Rahmah for its branch in Johor Baru.

“We have various designs, and the prices go as low as RM39 for a child’s set and RM89 for a lady’s set.

“With these prices, we hope that we will be able to help those in need and make their Hari Raya celebrations livelier,” he said, adding some of the customers came from Singapore and Batam, Indonesia.
