KUCHING: Sarawak will also get an extra public holiday for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, in line with a similar declaration by the Federal Government.
State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said this was decided by the state government after getting advice from Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
"If Syawal 1 falls on Friday, April 21, the state government has set Monday, April 24, as an additional public holiday.
"If Syawal 1 falls on Saturday, April 22, the additional public holiday will be on Friday, April 21," he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 19).
He added that if Hari Raya falls on Saturday, the second day would be on Sunday (April 23) and the next day would automatically be a replacement holiday.
The additional holiday is declared under Section 5 of the state's Public Holidays Ordinance.
Sarawak's extra Hari Raya holiday is the same as that announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday (April 18).
Anwar had said this would allow the public to make travel plans and preparations for the celebration.
The additional public holiday is based on Section 8 of the Holidays Act 1951 for Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan.
Anwar also said that for Sabah and Sarawak, state governments can declare the date for public holiday accordingly.
