MERSING: A crew member of a fishing vessel tested positive for drugs during a special operation in Johor waters by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the National Anti-Drug Agency.
MMEA Mersing Zone Maritime Commander Suhaizan Saadin said six commercial fishing vessels and one recreational angler's boat were inspected during the operation at about 8.30am on Wednesday (April 19).
"The operation was conducted to prevent and curb criminal activities, especially the use of drugs among the local maritime community.
"Following the checks, we found that a local crew member of one of the fishing vessels tested positive for drugs.
"The 37-year-old was handed over to the anti-drug agency after testing positive for methamphetamine," he said in a statement on Thursday (April 20).
He said the operation involved a maritime vessel with some 12 officers from the Mersing MMEA and the anti-drug agency.
"MMEA will continue conducting such operations with the relevant agencies and departments to prevent any wrongdoings among the maritime community," he said.
He urged the public to lodge complaints about any criminal activities in the maritime community to the MERS emergency line at 999 or the Johor Maritime Operations Centre at 07-219 9404.
