PETALING JAYA: The Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the two enforcement officers nabbed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) were Immigration Department enforcement officers.
It also clarified that the two were previously stationed at the Malaysian Immigration Attaché at the Malaysian High Commission in Bangladesh for a short time.
"We will fully cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in investigating the two officers in line with efforts by the Malaysia Madani government to combat corruption," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement on Thursday (April 20), adding that it took seriously the integrity of its staff members stationed in high commissions of foreign countries.
Earlier on Thursday (April 20), reports said the two enforcement officers were ordered to return home recently and were remanded for three days until Thursday (April 20).
Sources said the officers' assistance were needed by graft investigators probing into visa issues and the entry of tourists and workers from Bangladesh to Malaysia.
It said more than 20 accounts had been frozen and assets estimated to worth RM3.1mil had been seized in connection with the case.
It is not immediately known whether the two suspects had been released when their remand order ended on Thursday.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the matter and did not rule out the possibility that more arrests would be made.
