JOHOR BARU: Traders have been warned that the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will keep an eye on food prices around the city, especially near the state’s border with Singapore.
Its minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub foodsaid he had made spot checks after receiving complaints from the public about traders selling goods at an unreasonable price here.
“After visiting the market, I found several traders were selling items above the ceiling price set under the Festive Season Maximum Price Control Scheme.
“I have informed enforcement officers to follow up on the matter and take the appropriate action, whether to just give a warning or take more stern action if this is a repeated offence,” he said when asked about his visit to the market here.
Salahuddin said traders were found selling imported buffalo meat at RM24 per kilo when the maximum price was set at RM20 per kilo.
“We have conducted similar checks at several locations in other parts of the state over the past few days and have yet to come across such cases.
“Perhaps due to the proximity of this market to our border with Singapore, some take advantage of the situation by putting a higher price tag on their goods.
“We will pay serious attention and closely monitor the prices of goods sold in areas near the border. Strong action will be taken against those taking advantage of the situation,” he said.
On another matter, Salahuddin said there were no signs of panic buying among the public for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
“I believe people are more prepared this year and have already made early preparations,” he added.
