PETALING JAYA: The long Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday has given the food and beverage industry a boost, says an industry player.
Malaysia and Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietor General Association president Wong Teu Hoon said that this is because holidays are often a time for people to gather with friends and family.
"The food and beverage industry is benefitting from this increased demand," he said.
Citing Melaka as an example, he said that all coffee shops were already packed on Saturday (April 22) with many tourists waiting in line for a seat.
“It is similar for restaurants, as many are almost completely booked,” said Wong.
Similarly, Selangor and Federal Territory Ku Su Shin Chung Hung Restaurants Association deputy president Justin Hor Chee Keong said reservations for restaurants in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have exceeded 80%.
"Many Klang Valley residents come here on long weekends to shop and eat, and there are also a lot of tourists. Caterers are doing well these days," he added.
However, he said that there has not been a similar surge in Johor Bahru during this period.
"Singaporean tourists tend to visit Johor Baru on weekends for shopping, as there are not many tourist attractions there,” said Hor.
