Cops nab 57 mat rempit after six-hour hideout at oil palm estate

KULAI: After hiding at an oil palm plantation for six hours, a group of “mat rempit" finally gave in and surrendered themselves to the police here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Tok Beng Yeow said 57 men aged between 17 and 42 tried to escape being caught by hiding in the plantation area near KM7 of Jalan Kulai-Kota Tinggi during an operation on Friday (April 21).

“During the operation at about 3am, most of the mat rempit ran to the plantation area hoping that there was an alternative way out - but all other routes had been blocked by the police.

“They then stayed in that area for hours but by around 9am, one by one started surrendering, as they could not find any way to escape.

“They also could no longer withstand the heat in the plantation and were hungry too,” he said in a statement here on Sunday (April 23).

Supt Tok added that the special operation was conducted between 11pm on Friday (April 21) and 5pm on Saturday (April 22).

“During the operation, we have also issued a total of 140 summons for various offences and seized 39 motorcycles under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
