Man drowns in attempt to retrieve stuck fishing line in Kinabatangan pond


KOTA KINABALU: A man drowned after sustaining cramps after diving into a pond to retrieve a stuck fishing line in the Kinabatangan district.

The 43-year-old victim was fishing with friends at a pond in the Melewar Paris 3 estate during the noon accident on Sunday (April 23).

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Hamsa Isnurdini said they received a call about the incident at 12.15pm.

He said according to the victim's friend, the victim had jumped into the pond to retrieve his stuck fishing line.

"However, the victim sustained cramps and drowned," said Hamsa.

He said the body was found at 3.06pm and handed over to the police for further action.

Operations ceased at 3.35pm, he said, adding no one else was injured.
