KUALA LUMPUR: The police and PLUS Bhd have activated two smartlane stretches on the North-South Expressway (NSE) to address congestion as vehicles make their way back to the Klang Valley after the Hari Raya holidays.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mat Kasim Karim, said that the two northbound routes are from the Port Dickson intersection at KM259 to the Seremban intersection (KM263) as well as from the Senai intersection (KM19) to the Kulai intersection (KM27).
"The high volume of vehicles heading to the capital city causes congestion in some places, such as hilly areas, and when three lanes converge to two.
"Police officers are at hotspot locations on highways, federal and state roads as well as city roads where there is congestion to the capital.
Police personnel and drone units are systematically deployed to ensure smooth and controlled traffic flow," he said in a statement on Monday (April 24).
The smartlane aims to optimise the use of all lanes, including opening the leftmost (emergency) space as a temporary lane to increase lane capacity and help smooth traffic flow.
Mat Kasim said that the public can channel information related to accidents or unusual congestion to the Bukit Aman traffic control room at 03-2266 3356, which operates 24 hours a day.
Meanwhile in Facebook post, the police announced that there were a total of 1,381 accidents, involving 2,072 vehicles nationwide on Sunday (April 23), the fourth day of Ops Selamat 20.
Op Selamat 20 is being implemented for seven days from April 20.
It said that cars recorded the highest number of accidents with 1,528 or 73.7% of total cases recorded.
"This was followed by motorcycles (256), four-wheel drive vehicles (122), multi-purpose vehicles (102 cases), vans (43), lorries (13), buses (five), and three cases of accidents involving taxis," read the statement.
They also advised road users to be vigilant to avoid any accidents. – Bernama
