KOTA KINABALU: The Royal Malaysian Navy has safely disposed of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) believed to be a World War II (WW2) bomb, which was found in Kota Belud waters on Monday (April 24).
Kota Belud district police earlier sought the navy’s assistance to check the object, suspected to be an old bomb, found at Pulau Mantanani coastal waters, about 43 nautical miles northeast from the Kota Kinabalu naval base.
“The navy bomb disposal team consisting of the diver unit and technician from the eastern naval ammunition and explosive depot were assigned to the mission of retrieving and disposing of the object.
“Based on investigations and witness interviews, the team confirmed that the object is an inactive UXO of the 500lbs semi-armour piercing (SAP) bomb AN-M58 type, which is American made and used during WWII.
“The bomb was brought over to the land and successfully disposed of by the team in the evening,” the Eastern Fleet Command strategic communications division said in a statement here on Tuesday (April 25).
