KOTA KINABALU: Some 200 villagers in Sabah’s south-western Tawau district had to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri without electricity.
The villagers of Kampung Luasong about 74km from Tawau town had been without electricity since the start of the fasting month after a diesel generator set put up by state-owned Yayasan Sabah broke down.
Kalabakan MP Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy said he hoped the generator set would be repaired as soon as possible.
“The generator is the only source of power for the villagers pending the completion of the long-delayed Luasong Rural Electricity Supply Scheme (BELB),” he said during a recent visit to Luasong.
“The residents whom I met complained about this problem (lack of electricity supply) since the fasting month (Ramadan) began.
“I hope immediate action will be taken by the authorities to deal with this problem.
“They have been experiencing power supply interruptions several times this year due to the main generator breaking down.”
Andi Muhammad, who is also Tanjung Batu assemblyman, said that he hoped the completion of the BELB Luasong project would be accelerated so that the residents no longer have to rely on the use of generators that often break down.
So far, the BELB Luasong project has only been 73% completed.
According to the schedule, the target should be 94% completed to date.
Andi Muhammad, who is also state industrial development and entrepreneurship assistant minister, said he was informed the delay in the project was due to the lack of cables and some labour shortage issues.
