Duo nabbed after spending over RM1,000 using ATM card found in car wash

KOTA KINABALU: A 19-year-old woman managed to spend over RM1,000 by illegally swiping someone else's ATM (automated teller machine) card before being nabbed by police in Sabah's east coast Tawau district.

Also arrested on Wednesday (April 26) was her fiancé's 24-year-old younger brother who found the card at a car wash in Kubota.

Police arrested the woman at a fast food outlet in Taman Megah Jaya at 10pm, not long after the card's owner reported the matter.

Tawau deputy OCPD Supt Champin Piuh said the owner only realised his card was missing after receiving a SMS alert stating that a transaction was made at a fast food chain.

After checking, the owner found that his bank account funds had depleted and lodged a police report.

"Based on the interrogation, the man passed the card to the woman after finding it," he said on Thursday (April 27) adding the woman has spent a total of RM1,160.90 on the card before the arrest.

Both suspects have been remanded for four days for investigations under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997.
