Former Penang Free School scoutmaster passes away


Khoo (right) passed away on Wednesday (April 26) at the age of 74.

GEORGE TOWN: Long-serving Penang Free School (PFS) teacher Khoo Poh Kheng, who was scoutmaster from 1979 to 1991, passed away on Wednesday (April 26) at the age of 74.

Khoo was a pillar of the historic school where he taught from 1978 to 2003, excluding a short year-long stint in Butterworth.

He filled the role of senior assistant in PFS before becoming SM Hutchings headmaster.

The Geography and English teacher was also a stalwart of the scouting community.

As PFS scoutmaster, he oversaw the growth of generations of young scouts in the school's three troops: 1st George Town South, 7th George Town South and 8th George Town South Sea Scouts.

Khoo spent his childhood days in Balik Pulau and was a head boy at SMK St George Balik Pulau before furthering his studies in Universiti Malaya.

His wake will be held at the Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi Funeral Parlour until 2pm on Friday (April 28).

The funeral service will commence at the same venue.

The cortege will leave thereafter for the Batu Gantung Crematorium.
