Melaka exco man says victim of 'deep fakes' after being implicated in alleged scandal

MELAKA: A Melaka executive councillor claims that he is the victim of deep fake technology after being implicated in an alleged sex scandal.

State housing and local government, climate change and disaster management committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said allegations of him being involved in such a scandal had surfaced during the Umno divisional election in March.

"This is a form of defamation that is designed to discredit me and throw me in disrepute," he said after visiting the main Bachang wet market here to gauge a minor zinc roof collapse on Thursday (April 27).

Rais said he was willing to cooperate with the authorities in any probe on the issue.

"I was also taken aback to see the viral post implicating me that is being circulated," he said.

Rais said he will also consider taking legal action against those who continue to defame him.

"My main priority now is to focus on working closely with Melaka Chief Minister (Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh) to bring more progress to the state without being distracted by such issues," he said, adding that he hoped those defaming him would stop their acts.

On Tuesday (April 25), Ab Rauf dismissed a social media post on an alleged sex scandal involving a senior Melaka exco member as mere slander.

He said such an accusation made against his exco member could also be a deliberate move to undermine the state government and there was a possibility that the video could have been doctored.

A post with a video clip and WhatsApp message was circulated on social media purportedly showing the exco member engaging in an “obscene” phone conversation with a woman on Tuesday (April 25).

Ab Rauf said he also does not discount the possibility that the post was being circulated by political foes in the state.
