MMEA evacuates cruise passenger following stroke at sea

The woman being lowered on to the MMEA boat to be taken to the Port Dickson Hospital for treatment.

PORT DICKSON: Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) personnel rescued a 66-year-old passenger who suffered a stroke while on board a cruise ship heading from Penang to Singapore.

MMEA Melaka and Negri Sembilan director Maritime Capt Iskandar Ishak said a team was dispatched to carry out the medical evacuation after the agency received information on the emergency from the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre in Johor Baru.

"We received information that a female passenger on board the Spectrum of the Seas suffered a stroke during the trip. One of our assets which was on routine patrol in the area was then dispatched to help the victim,” he said.

"The cruise liner was then about 3.8 nautical miles south-west of Port Dickson," added Capt Iskandar.

Capt Iskandar said his team immediately conducted an evacuation as the passenger looked weak and needed urgent medical treatment.

He said the woman was transferred to the boat and was rushed to the Marine Department jetty here.

"They reached the jetty around 10pm on Wednesday (April 26) and the woman was taken to the Port Dickson Hospital," he said.

He said in addition to law enforcement duties at sea, the MMEA also helps out in emergencies at sea such as conducting mercy flights or medical evacuation.

Capt Iskandar said anyone can contact the MMEA at 06-3876730 or the MERS999 line which operates 24 hours to report an emergency at sea.
