Nine-year-old boy drowns in Kedah river

ALOR SETAR: A nine-year-old boy has drowned in Sungai Limau near the water treatment plant here.

Baling OCPD Supt Shamsudin Mamat said in the incident that occurred at about 11am on Thursday (April 27), the victim, Muhammad Yusuf Khairuddin, drowned while swimming in the river with his siblings.

"During the incident, the mother of the deceased was feeding three other children at the edge of the river.

"She was only 10m away from her son when the incident happened," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Supt Shamsudin said the mother initially saw all five of her children playing in the river but later realised one of her sons was missing.

She started searching for him and was told by one of her daughters that she saw her younger brother moving towards a pipe near the river.

After a search, the victim was found about 1.5km from the location he was last seen.

The body of the victim was taken to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar and a post-mortem examination has been scheduled on Friday (April 28).
