TAIPING: The Taiping Municipal Council issued 128 compound notices for a total of RM32,000 to litterbugs from January to March.
Council president Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir said 127 of these were issued to those caught littering on CCTV cameras placed at strategic locations, while one notice was written on the spot.
“I wish to remind anyone littering, or discarding garbage illegally, that action will be taken against them under the Public Cleanliness by-laws 1984.
“‘We will issue notices for compounds of not more than RM250. If (offenders are) brought to court and... found guilty, (they face) a fine of RM2,000 and jail of not more than a year, or both.
“Enforcement will be stepped up from time to time to ensure that Taiping is a clean city in conjunction with its 150th anniversary, and Visit Perak Year, both of which are next year,” he said in his winding-up speech at the council’s full board meeting on Friday (April 28).
Khairul Amir said the council would also continue its ewaste and plogging (picking up litter while jogging) tour series at the Kamunting food court on May 6 from 8.30am to 10.30am.
He said people are encouraged to bring disused electrical items to the collection centre.
“Those who bring in items will be provided with cash according to the price set.
“Plogging activities have been held four times at different locations since its introduction early this year,” he added.
Khairul Amir said since the launch of the ewaste collection programme, a total of 322 items have been collected, and a total of RM522 disbursed.
“The series has received good response, so we will continue with it,” he added.
