PETALING JAYA: Labour Day has put the spotlight not just on workers, but on business owners as well.
Food and beverage business operator D. Michael, who has five people working for him in his business, said that being a boss is more than just giving orders.
“It’s about empowering your staff to make sure they can be better people.
“As a boss, I try to push them out of their comfort zone by assigning various tasks to help them reach new heights in their personal development.
“I also make it a point for a weekend team getaway once every four months,” he said.
Michael added that such gatherings also allow team members to bond with one another outside of work.
“With the camaraderie, teamwork improves and ultimately, the business performs better as well,” he said.
A businessman who wanted to be known only as Charles said employees at his company are treated the way he would have treated his younger self.
“Some come from not-so-well-off backgrounds and are looking for job opportunities.
“I was in that spot once and understand their hardship. That is why I almost always give them the benefit of the doubt,” said Charles, who co-runs a small construction company.
“Trusting them to carry out their duties is also important but, of course, this is not without giving them adequate training and skills for the job,” he added.
Fitness equipment supplier JH Lim said he would ensure all his workers have their personal needs and interests looked into.
“Employees are the heart and soul of any company.
“Prioritising their needs also increases their work satisfaction, which can improve productivity.
“At the same time, employees too should understand their responsibilities and perform accordingly,” he said.
Lim said a strong bond among team members will create a more healthy working environment, allowing his business to function better.
