Cops to crack down on fake title peddlers and users

KUALA LUMPUR: Stern action will be taken against those who use fake titles such as Datuk, Datuk Seri and Tan Sri, says the Selangor police chief.

Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said using fake titles was a serious matter and titles should not be trifled with.

“Using fake titles is illegal and besmirches the honour of legitimate ones.

“We have and will take stern action against those using or selling fake titles,” he said.

Comm Hussein said police had investigated several cases of those using a fake Datukship and even culprits who sold fake titles.

“We urge the public to be wary and verify with legitimate sources on the authenticity of a title bestowed on any individual.

“Lodge a police report as soon as possible should you chance upon those suspected to be using fake titles,” he added.

Comm Hussein also said the public could check with the official government portal www.istiadat.gov.my to verify the authenticity of someone’s title.

“Those with fake titles use it to enhance their business or public profile.

“It is not only illegal but also tarnishes the good name of the palace,” he added.

In March, two men were arrested for allegedly duping a man into buying a bogus Darjah Kebesaran Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor (SPMS) which carries the title “Datuk Seri”.

“The suspects were detained in Melaka and Selangor.

“They were subsequently charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code,” Comm Hussein said.

On the police report lodged by the Council of Dato and Datuk Malaysia (MDDM) against eight people for allegedly using fake Datuk, Datuk Seri and Tan Sri titles, he said police would investigate the matter.

“Lodging a report is the right move so that we can take the necessary action,” Comm Hussein said.
