PETALING JAYA: Ex-Umno members Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan should join DAP as the party needs prime minister candidates, says one of its former lawmakers.

"DAP needs PM candidates and both of you fit the bill," Ong Kian Ming, who was previously Bangi MP, said on Tuesday (May 2) on the "Keluar Sekejap" podcast hosted by the duo.

Ong was responding to a question on why Khairy and Shahril should join DAP.

In January, Khairy, a former Umno Youth chief, was sacked by the party. Shahril, the party’s information chief, was suspended for six years.

Others punished in the Umno purge included former minister and Selangor party chief Tan Sri Noh Omar, who was also sacked; and former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who was suspended for six years. Noh was initially suspended, but asked to be sacked.

Former Umno Youth exco member Datuk Dr Fathul Bari Mat Jahya, former Johor state exco member and Tebrau Umno division chief Datuk Maulizan Bujang and former Jempol MP Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Shariff were also suspended for six years.
