KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Jauteh Dikun has been confirmed as the Sabah Police Commissioner, becoming the first Kadazandusun to helm the post.
He was previously the acting Sabah police chief, having taken over from Datuk Idris Abdullah, the former state police commissioner who retired on March 31.
Jauteh, 57, was also promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police from his previous rank of Deputy Commissioner.
In his speech during the rank conferment ceremony yesterday, Jauteh outlined his vision for the state police contingent, saying he was determined to improve police infrastructure at the Sabah-Indonesia border.
“I will take the opportunity available through the Federal Government’s special allocation to Sabah, worth half a billion ringgit, to improve the defence capabilities in the Sabah-Indonesia border,” he said.
He is also targeting for the construction of infrastructure at the district police headquarters in interior Nabawan as well as Kalabakan in the east coast.
“I will continue some of the policies and plans of the previous leadership, particularly on infrastructure and human resource development.
“This is to ensure improvement in quality and performance, efficiency and capability so that the needs of the people will be met,” he said.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, who was present at the ceremony held at the Sabah police headquarters in Kepayan here, said Comm Jauteh’s appointment as the state police chief was the right decision in order to ensure the safety and security of Sabah.
“As one of the top tourist destinations, Sabah’s security has the highest attention from the Royal Malaysian Police,” he said.
He voiced confidence that Comm Jauteh would be able to maintain safety in Sabah and ensure the tourism industry was looked after.
Comm Jauteh joined the police force as an assistant superintendent in 1994 and went on to hold several high positions in various departments.
Among others, he was the Kota Belud OCPD from 1997 to 2001, the Sabah Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief from 2005 to 2008 and then 2011 to 2012, and head of the insurance crime unit in Bukit Aman from 2010 to 2011.
In 2012, he was named the Kota Kinabalu OCPD with the rank of assistant commissioner before being appointed as the State Crime Investigation Department (CID) head from 2018 to 2021.
He held the Sabah Deputy Commissioner of Police position from 2021 to this year.
The Ranau-born Jauteh will be the third Sabahan to lead the state police contingent after Datuk Illiyas Ibrahim and Datuk Omar Mammah.
Yesterday, Acryl Sani also witnessed the handing over of the Sabah deputy police chief post from Jauteh to Deputy Comm Shahurinain Jais, who was previously the Johor CID chief.
Acryl Sani described Shahurinain, who was promoted from his last rank of senior assistant commissioner, as an experienced officer in CID as well as in the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (in Bukit Aman).
“I am convinced that he will be a good deputy for Jauteh in ensuring that the Sabah police contingent continues to perform well,” he said.
