Cop claims trial to three counts of bribery

IPOH: A 35-year-old policeman has claimed trial to three bribery charges.

L/Kpl Mohd Effie Faizal Che Min pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him before Sessions Court judge Ahmad Kamar Jamaludin here on Wednesday (May 3).

According to the first charge, Mohd Effie Faizal was said to have asked for RM300 from one Khor Jin Siang for having an expired scrap goods licence at Siyian Trading office in Taman Perindustrian Pengkalan, Taiping at about 3.40pm on May 17, 2017.

In the second alternative charge, the accused was said to have received RM300 from Khor at the same location on the same day.

For the third alternative charge, Mohd Effie Faizal was said to have received a RM400 bribe from Khor through one Thang Kim Hoon after Siyian Trading had failed to show a licence for selling scrap goods at the same location at about 5.30pm on April 4, 2017.

For the first and third counts, he was charged under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, while the second offence was under Section 17(a) of the same Act.

Deputy public prosecutor Maziyah Mansor requested bail to be set at RM5,000 for each charge with one surety.

Lawyer Shahidah Muslimah Roslan, who represented the accused, requested RM3,000 bail for all charges.

“My client is the sole breadwinner for his family. His wife is a homemaker and they have three small children aged eight, four and two.

“He is also responsible for taking care of his parents who suffer from chronic diseases,” she said.

Shahidah said Mohd Effie Faizal, who is stationed at Pokok Assam, has a good working record.

“He has been a policeman since 2008 and never had any prior issues.

“Since we just celebrated Hari Raya Aidilfitri, a lot of money has been used for the celebration, so I hope the court would consider setting bail at RM3,000,” she said.

Judge Ahmad Kamar set bail at RM15,000 for all charges with one surety and fixed June 9 for mention.
