Penang records 1,030 accidents during eight-day Ops Selamat 20

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 1,030 accidents have been recorded during the eight-day Ops Selamat 20 in Penang.

State police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said in this period, 4,570 summonses were issued to traffic offenders.

"During Ops Selamat 20, we recorded three fatal accidents against nine last year," he said during a walkabout at Jelutong Market on Wednesday (May 3)

This was a 67% decrease in fatalities, he noted.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said police would no longer tolerate motorists breaking traffic laws and issue summonses on the spot.

He said public education since early this year had raised awareness of traffic laws among motorists.

"I can see that the public education programme has made motorists more aware of traffic rules," he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily spent about an hour at the market mingling and chatting with the public.
