Sandakan man detained for fishing in prohibited waters

KOTA KINABALU: A local man was arrested for fishing in prohibited waters off Sabah's east coast Sandakan district.

By the time the marine police arrested him, the 62-year-old man had already caught some 200kg of fish and prawns.

Personnel from the Region 4 marine police unit detained the man under "Ops Taring Gelora" at 10.30am on Monday (May 1).

The man was found using trawling nets within three nautical miles from shore in waters stretching from Tanjung Nuing to Tanjung Pandaras Teluk Labuk in Beluran, which has been gazetted as a no-fishing zone.

Authorities estimated that the catch was worth about RM2,000.

Region 4 marine police commander Asst Comm Ahmad Ariffin confirmed the arrest and seizure, adding the case has been handed over to the Sandakan Fisheries Department for further action.
