Global anti-addiction professionals to attend three-day summit in Melaka

MELAKA: The state will host the International Recovery Summit (IRS) 2023 here, an event to celebrate and laud the efforts of addiction professionals who assist individuals in their recovery from substance abuse.

Tay Bian How, Asian Metropolitan University (AMU) director of emeritus addiction studies, said a total of about 70 addiction professionals from the United Kingdom, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia would participate in the three-day summit from May 9 to 11, at a hotel here.

"Among the highlights of this IRS is the AMU convocation ceremony for addiction professionals who have successfully completed several professional certifications as well as executive master and post graduate diploma in addiction science programmes," he said on Thursday (May 4).

"With the acquired qualifications, they are better positioned to compete with addiction professionals to render quality services," he said.

Tay said apart from the convocation ceremony, participants will learn about science-driven approaches to deal with addiction.

He said there would also be segments on effective recovery management, positive management styles in rehab organisations, managing co-occurring disorders, and self-care for addiction professionals.

He added that participants would also hear of the strategies which are ineffective, particularly those involving human rights violations or non-compliance to the code of ethics for addiction professionals.
