PETALING JAYA: Four people who went fishing were rescued by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) after they were stranded at sea for six hours near Pulau Tengah.
Selangor MMEA director Maritime Captain V. Siva Kumar said the agency's operation centre received a report of a damaged fishing boat with four people some 1.6 nautical miles off Pulau Tengah at about 9.45pm on Saturday (May 6).
"We immediately dispatched a boat to the location," he said in a statement on Sunday (May 7).
He said the victims - Asfian Abu Bakar, 44, and his son Arfan Rafiq, 18, along with Zamri Che Ani, 45, and Ahmad Ali, 66 - were found safe and they were brought to a Marine Police jetty in Pulau Indah.
"The victims did not sustain any injuries while the fishing boat had to be anchored at the rescue location as it had leakages.
"The rescue operation was concluded at about 1.35am Sunday," he added.
Siva Kumar reminded fishing enthusiasts to increase their safety awareness and take the right action by wearing life jackets while at sea.
"The fishing community must also store the MERS 999 hotline number and it is also advisable for them to have a Personal Locator Beacon, which will assist rescuers to track down their locations during emergencies.
"We urge those with sea emergencies to contact the Selangor MMEA operation centre at 03-3176 0627 or MERS 999," he said.
