JOHOR BARU: Johor has approved the acquisition of 1,500 smart closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) for installation in three major cities in the state.
Johor housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the facilities would be installed by the end of this year in line with the Greater Johor Baru agenda.
The three local councils – the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) and Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) – would each get 500 smart CCTVs, he said.
“The new CCTVs are equipped with artificial intelligence that has facial recognition, vehicle number plate scanning and the recording of related data meant for improving security and safety.
“A command centre, linked to the police’s command centre for a more concerted enforcement effort, will also be set up.
“The smart CCTVs will replace the existing ones, including those that are faulty, as well as those currently installed at places of interest and locations with high traffic volume,” he told reporters after attending a gotong-royong programme here yesterday.
The state government, said Mohd Jafni, had approved the working paper for the CCTV facilities in 2022 for the implementation to be carried out this year.
Besides the three local councils, the Kulai Municipal Council, which is also part of the Greater Johor Baru agenda, would get 100 smart CCTVs soon, he added.
