SEREMBAN: The unity government has never betrayed nor taken away the rights of the Malays, and it has continued implementing all policies to safeguard their interests. says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister hit out at critics who claimed that his national unity government has compromised the rights of the Malays.
“There are some rich Malays supposedly fighting to safeguard the rights of the Malays who are claiming that Anwar cannot be trusted and the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi can’t look after the Malays,” he added.
He said some opposition members have also labelled him as the “worst PM ever” for allegedly failing to safeguard Malay rights.
“But I wish to know how has my government taken away or surrendered the rights of the Malays since we assumed power six months ago?
“We have continued with the policies and safeguarded Malay rights, but what we didn’t do is to ask for commissions, timber, land or shares.
“Members of my government are not here to steal money belonging to the people,” he said at the Negri Sembilan government Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house yesterday.
Anwar said instructions were also frequently sent out reminding those in power not to seek gratifications whenever tenders are issued.
“Even flood mitigation projects have been carried out transparently and we managed to save RM2bil.
“More flood mitigation projects were also carried out in Kota TInggi and Batu Pahat in Johor as well as Sungai Golok in Kelantan.
“But yet people say we have not helped the people in Kelantan,” he said.
Anwar also challenged former leaders who seemed to be championing the rights of the Malays to explain their and their families’ sources of wealth.
If these leaders were genuinely concerned for the Malays, they should sell off their properties and give the proceeds to them, he added.
Anwar said past leaders who have been harping on issues to “save the Malays” only enriched themselves and their families when they were in power.
