KOTA KINABALU: "Tribesman – The Last Red Hunter", a fictional story inspired by a legendary Sabah warrior, will be screened at selected cinemas in Malaysia in conjunction with the Kaamatan month.

The 90-minute film directed by Khalid Sulaiman, Rashid Abu Bakar and Flora Juanis premiered at Asia City here Thursday (May 11) and will be screened in selected cinemas in Sabah, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur and Brunei Darussalam.

Juanis, who is also the scriptwriter of the RM600,000 movie, said the film was initially inspired by the famous Murut, Antanom, but it was difficult to put together his story as there was more research needed.

“With the difficulties gathering details of Antanom, I decided to make a fictional story and combine various local dialects in it, which allows me to be more creative in producing the film without having the restriction to stick on facts,” she said at the premier.

She said the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) had funded half the cost of the film that was shot in several tourist destinations in Sabah including Mari Mari Cultural Village and Papas Eco Farm Kiulu.

The cast was mainly Sabahans with only one actor from Kuala Lumpur while all but six of the 37 production crew members were Sabahans.

“It took us about 18 months to complete the shooting of the movie," she said.

“For the post-production process, we took about a year to finish and everything was done here in Sabah,” she added.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan was among the guests at the film's premier.
