Marine cops foil smuggling attempt in Kudat

KOTA KINABALU: The marine police foiled an attempt to smuggle out subsidised fuel and gas cylinders to a neighbouring country from Sabah’s northern Kudat district.

Under Ops Taring Landai, they also detained a 57-year-old local man at 3.30pm on Thursday (May 11).

It was learned that after stopping a boat for a check in waters near Kudat town, they found 14 jerrycans containing some 490 litres of petrol and a further 18 jerrycans with 630 litres of diesel.

Also on board were three cooking gas cylinders.

The items and boat were estimated to be worth over RM53,000.

Region Four commander Asst Comm Ahmad Ariffin confirmed the case when contacted on Friday (May 12).

He said the suspect and seized items have been handed over to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry district office for the next course of action.
