JOHOR BARU: Despite Mothers Day falling on Sunday, May 14, many have started celebrating the occasion earlier with simple gestures to show appreciation to their mothers.
Factory operator Yap Kia En, 26, said she and her three siblings will bring their mother out for a special dinner a day before the actual celebration.
“Our mother has worked very hard for us and always made time for us despite her busy schedule.
“It will be unfair for us not to make time for her special day, which comes just once a year. She deserves so much more than we could ever give her.
“That is why, come Mothers Day, we will make sure we do something special for her even when we are busy. If we can’t make it on Mothers Day itself, we will celebrate it one or two days earlier,” she told The Star.
She added that growing up, she and her siblings would mark Mothers Day by giving a simple card to their mother.
“Now that we are older and have our own jobs, we give her special dinners and flowers.
“But the most important thing is for us to just be there for her on her special day,” said Yap, who works in Singapore.
Meanwhile, shop assistant Aqilah Hisham, 27, said that she and her sister will be baking a cake for their mother this year.
“Normally, we will just buy the cake, but this year, we decided to bake it ourselves. It feels like a fun thing to do for our mother.
“We will probably be making the cake on Saturday night at my house before bringing it over to our mother’s house,” she said.
Student management assistant Nurul Aisha Mohd Yusoff, 36, said that she was surprised to get a bouquet of flowers from her husband and two children.
“I do not expect much for Mother’s Day, but the simple gesture was very touching. I really appreciate the effort,” she said.
