Couple arrested in Melaka for suspected car theft

AMPANG: A married couple was detained for allegedly stealing a car from a rental company in Taman Pandan Cahaya here.

Ampang OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the company had initially rented a Proton Preve to a man for six months beginning Dec 12 last year, which required the man to pay RM700 per month.

"However, the man had not paid for about two months and the company failed to detect the car's GPS as it might have been dismantled," he said in a statement on Saturday (May 13).

ACP Mohd Farouk then added that a 29-year-old man who works as a contractor and his 44-year-old wife were then arrested in Alor Gajah, Melaka at about 2.15am on Friday (May 12).

"We seized the missing car, a remote key and a mobile phone. Both suspects tested negative for drugs," he added.

ACP Mohamad Farouk said the suspects have been remanded until Monday (May 15).

"We are investigating the case under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, which carries between a year and seven-year prison sentence or a fine or both upon conviction," he said.
