JOHOR BARU: Florists here are hoping to see a last-minute boom in sales for Mothers Day this year.
Supervisor of a flower shop at a mall here, Jacqueline Wong, 43, said that business has yet to pick up despite Mothers Day falling on Sunday.
“Mothers Day is always the busiest time for flower shops but we noticed that business has been rather slow compared with previous years.
“Normally, orders would start coming in from April but this year, orders have shrunk significantly,” she said when met at the shop here.
However, Wong is holding out hope that business will pick up as it is common for children to get the blooms on Mothers Day itself.
She added that carnations remain the favourite for Mothers Day, with some opting to mix the bouquets with some roses.
“Apart from flowers, some customers also prefer to get preserved flowers,” she said.
Florist Eunice Ching Yok Lian, 46 said that Mothers Day sales have dropped slightly.
“Mothers Day is just a few days away but there has yet to be any significant increase in sales.
“However, we are fully prepared to face a sudden increase in sales as we expect people to only be buying flowers on the day itself,” she said.
Another florist who only wanted to be known as Ng said that the increase in cost of living may have prompted many to celebrate Mothers Day without blooms.
“There are many ways for people to show appreciation to their mothers and buying flowers is just one of them.
“I believe that many people are now celebrating Mothers Day by making dinner at home or bring their mothers for a vacation instead of merely buying flowers,” he said.
