Do more to increase women's participation in various sectors, says Wanita MCA chief

KUALA LUMPUR: More needs to be done to achieve the target of having 30% women's participation in various sectors, says Wanita MCA chief Wong You Fong.

She said the government must come up with a comprehensive plan and provide incentives for women to participate in various sectors.

"The participation of women in all sectors remains low compared to men.

"For instance, we only have 32 women MPs compared to 190 male MPs.

"The participation of women in top positions and boards of government linked companies remains low too.

"We need to aspire to uphold the spirit of gender equality as expressed in the federal constitution in order for the country to move forward, progressive and modern," she said at the Unity Government National Women Convention at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTC) on Sunday (May 14).

She added that the government needed to be committed to improving women's participation in the economy by implementing targetted strategies to help the group.

Among them was to form a body to assist women entrepreneurs and set up specific cooperatives for women as well as a development bank for women.

She also highlighted the importance of having political stability and protecting the mandate given by the people.

"I am confident that the leadership under the unity government can work together to ensure success in the women empowerment agenda and to protect their welfare, security, education and gender equality," she said.
