Woman killed, husband seriously hurt in Johor car-lorry crash

KOTA TINGGI: A collision between a trailer lorry and a car left a 38-year-old woman dead and her husband severely injured.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said the accident took place on KM43.5 Jalan Johor Baru-Mersing near here at 8.10am on Sunday (May 14).

“The lorry, which was loaded with sacks of ground magnesium limestone (GML), entered the opposite lane bound for Johor Baru and crashed into the couple’s car.

“The woman passenger died at the scene after suffering severe head injuries while the driver, her husband, had both legs broken.

“The husband, 37, was rushed to Hospital Sultan Ismail for treatment,” he said in a statement.

The sacks of GML, a type of conditioner used to improve soil fertility, were also strewn on the road as a result of the crash.

The 31-year-old lorry driver was unhurt in the incident, Supt Hussin said, adding that he was believed to have lost control of the vehicle.

He added that a urine test on the lorry driver also came back negative and the man did not have a record.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of five to 10 years and a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000, and suspension of the driver's licence for up to five years, if convicted.
