MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong says intense politicking is detrimental to the country and must come to an end.
He said political rivals before the 15th General Election were now partners in the unity government and it was time to move ahead.
“The rivalry has ended and what is important is to move on. The current politics is about variants of ideas and thinking.
“The new political landscape requires political parties to be more dynamic and inclusive. Dulu lawan, sekarang kawan (From foes to friends),” he said to the loud applause of those present.
Dr Wee cautioned that political instability would have a negative effect on the economy and the people.
“It is important to build political stability and to defend it. The interest of the people must be prioritised, more so with the challenges due to global uncertainties,” he added in his address.
Dr Wee said that although MCA’s membership came from a particular race, the party was a pioneer in realising power sharing among the various races even before Merdeka.
He said MCA had always been an agent of unity to ensure stability.
“More importantly, we want to forge closer relationships between all races in Malaysia. We make clear the murky waters and not the other way around,” he added.
Dr Wee said the task of building unity was a challenging one considering the diverse nature of the nation.
He said the goal of building a national race was in line with the pursuits of MCA all along, citing the work back then of the party’s founder Tun Tan Cheng Lock.
“MCA must work for all and be broad-minded. It is not just for the Chinese but for all Malaysians,” Dr Wee added.
Speaking to reporters later, Dr Wee said it was important for members to understand and share the spirit of togetherness promoted by the unity government.
He said there was much to do for the rakyat who wanted to see a stable government.
“This includes good governance. At the same time, we have to be responsive and progressive.”
