A COURT in Sri Lanka has banned any event commemorating the toppling of the Rajapaksa political dynasty last year, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The Rajapaksa family had dominated Sri Lankan politics for about two decades, but protests erupted in the country early last year amid worsening economic conditions that had led to fuel and food shortages.

Then president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled abroad in July last year following the mass protests. Demonstrators had blamed the Rajapaksa-led government for the economic woes.

As the one-year anniversary of the seismic changes approached, police in Colombo appealed for a ban on any celebration to avoid clashes or violence.

The Colombo High Court agreed with the police.
