IPOH: One of the siblings in a family of five killed in a horrific car crash in Kampar never thought this Hari Raya would be their last celebration together.

Ahmad Danish Basyir Nasaruddin, 16, actually thought that a call from his cousin about the 2am accident yesterday was a joke until his teacher reaffirmed the bad news.

“I didn’t believe it at first, I thought my cousin was playing a prank. I only believed it when my schoolteacher told me about it and I rushed here,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama outside the Kampar Hospital’s Forensic Unit.

The SMA Izzuddin Shah student said the last time he met his mother, Azriyani Abdul Latif, 45, was during the recent Aidilfitri festive break.

“When she sent me back to the dormitory, she told me to take care of myself and not to create problems. That was the last time I spoke to her,” he said.

In the collision, five family members, including three children, were killed when the car they were in crashed into the back of a lorry at KM310 southbound of the North-South Expressway.

Ahmad Danish, the fourth of eight siblings, said he was especially close to his youngest brother Ahmad Uwais Al Qorni Nasaruddin, who was among those killed.

Kampar OCPD Supt Mohamad Nazri Daud said the deceased were Muhammad Azib Nasaruddin, 23, from Kampung Paya Panjang, Padang Rengas, and his siblings Siti Nur Aminah, eight, Ahmad Uwais, five, from Taman Bunga Raya, Kuala Kangsar and their mother Azriyani, from Kampung Changkat Petai, Tapah Road.

Another sibling, seven-year-old Muhammad Fawwaz Nasaruddin, succumbed to his injuries at 9.20am at the Tapah Hospital.

It is believed his family was heading to their grandparents’ house in Tapah to fetch Azriyani’s father for a health check-up.

In a statement, Supt Mohamad Nazri said four of the victims died at the scene.

The driver of the lorry, B. Saashi Rao, 25, was unhurt.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to the Kampar Hospital for a post-mortem.

“Initial investigations found that both vehicles were headed towards Kuala Lumpur from Ipoh. As they reached the spot of the accident, the car crashed into the back of the lorry,” Supt Mohamad Nazri said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving resulting in deaths.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre officer-in-charge Mohd Faisal Mohd Izham said the bonnet of the car caught fire after the crash.

“When we arrived, the four deceased were found trapped in the car. A passer-by put out the fire using an extinguisher,” he said.
