Nine eateries shut down over rats and roaches

KOTA KINABALU: Nine eateries at the Polytechnic Commercial Centre at Sepanggar have been shut down after health authorities found rats and cockroaches at their premises.

They were ordered to close under Section 32B of the Food Act 1983 and Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 for various offences in an operation by the Kota Kinabalu Health office’s Food Safety and Quality Unit.

A total of 11 notices were issued to the owners or representatives of outlets for various offences, Kota Kinabalu health officer Dr Prabakaran Dhanarah said.

“We inspected 15 premises and ordered nine of them to be closed immediately for various offences related to hygiene.

“Notices under Section 32B of the Food Act 1983 have also been issued for failure to register food premises with the Health Ministry.

“Food operators were also found not to have undergone food handling training and failed to get the anti-typhoid jab, while the operators did not comply with requirements regarding cleanliness, hygiene and pest control,” he said yesterday.

The operation also involved personnel from the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, and police.
