Remand order for woman suspected to have abused two babies to be extended, say Johor police

JOHOR BARU: The remand order for a woman who was detained for allegedly abusing two babies is expected to be extended, says Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat (pic).

He added investigations are still ongoing to find enough evidence in the case, besides waiting for the medical report from the Health Department.

“Her remand order will end tomorrow (May 19), but we will apply for an extension so that we can gather enough evidence on the case.

“Once everything is completed, we will hand over the investigation paper to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to wait further instructions,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after the Johor Police Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House at the Johor police headquarters here on Thursday (May 18).

The event was graced by Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

The police probe came following the emergence of two video clips on social media.

Comm Kamarul Zaman said that the investigation is still ongoing to find out the time of the incident based on the video clip.

“The video was recently shared and went viral, so we will look into when the incident had occurred,” he added.

Earlier, a 21-year-old woman was remanded for four days to help with investigations for allegedly abusing two babies at a childcare centre in Taman Mutiara Rini, Iskandar Puteri. She was arrested in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, at around 2am on Tuesday.

The woman, who worked as a babysitter at the centre, arrived at the court in orange lockup attire at around 9am Tuesday (May 16).

The remand will be from May 16 until May 19 to help with investigations under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years or a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
