KUCHING: The Communications and Digital Ministry is looking into several measures to resolve Internet connectivity issues in Sarawak, says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications and Digital Minister said the problems faced in the state included telecommunication towers that lacked transmitting equipment.
"I understand that the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) is installing more than 600 towers in Sarawak, but less than half have mobile network operators using them.
"Some of these towers are located in areas with 4G coverage and some in areas without," he told reporters after visiting the media room at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Friday (May 19).
To address this issue, Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) could request or give a directive to mobile network operators to provide services.
"This is one thing we are looking at. We will make an announcement in due course," he said.
Fahmi also his working visit to Sarawak was to observe and address Internet issues in the state and would include a courtesy call on Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
"We've asked MPs, including those in Sarawak, to state the Internet problems in their constituencies. I'm here as part of efforts to address these problems," he said.
