New system to speed up citizenship applications

PUTRAJAYA: An integrated system between the National Registration Department (NRD) and the police is in the works to expedite citizenship applications, says NRD director-general Zamri Misman.

With the integration in place, he said, the screening process and checks for citizenship applications can be done online.

Zamri said the system was expected to go live in October.

“Once in place, the screening process will be reduced from 53 days to five working days,” he said.

He was speaking at the NRD’s excellent service awards presentation, attended by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

For “problematic” applications, Zamri said the application process could be reduced from 73 days to 14 working days.

He said the department aimed to decide on 3,000 applications by the end of the year.

“God willing, no more backlog applications by the end of 2023,” he added.
