KANGAR: Farming Serama chicken can generate additional income.
Perlis Serama Chicken Association president Datuk Zainie Abdullah said breeding Serama chicken had huge potential and one bird could fetch from RM300 to RM1,500 based on its breed, grade, size, colour and age.
“I have met many Serama chicken breeders. They began breeding as a hobby and later, it became a source of additional income,” Zainie told Bernama.
He said Serama producers need quality brood stock if they want to sell chicks at a high price.
“Quality brood stock are chicken that have won Serama chicken competitions,” he said.
Zainie said to produce quality chicken, breeders could apply cross-breeding for diverse varieties. The Serama breed, which is popular in Malaysia is the H4 (fourth generation Hanuman) breed from Kelantan.
“Serama chicken in Malaysia is well-known and sought after by enthusiasts from Europe,” he said adding that a huge capital was not needed for the farming business.
“All one needs is some knowledge about breeding this variety of chicken,” he added.
