A NEWLY built undersea tunnel in Dalian, China, has come under scrutiny following a water leak inside the structure, China Press reported.

Videos have circulated, showing, among others, water coming out from the walls and parts of the 5.1km Dalian Bay undersea tunnel in Dalian, China’s Liaoning province.

“Getting stuck in this kind of situation is the scariest part when travelling inside a tunnel,” a netizen commented, referring to the water leak that happened at about 8.30am on May 16.

The incident caused a traffic snarl.

Other residents said they might try to avoid using the tunnel.

Authorities said after conducting an investigation, they found that the malfunctioning components of fire hydrants had caused water to flow into the tunnel.

The problem has been rectified, they said, adding that traffic has resumed as usual.

The tunnel was opened to the public on May 1 after six years of construction. It is said to be designed for use for 100 years.
