JOHOR BARU: The sugar supply in the country is still under control and not in "crisis", says Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said his ministry has also met with two sugar companies in the country - MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd (MSM) and Central Sugar Refinery Sdn Bhd (CSR) - who have given their assurance that the supply is enough.
“There has been talk recently saying that there is a lack of sugar supply in the country, which is false.
“The ministry met with MSM and CSR on Friday (May 19); this is the third time that we have met to discuss this matter, and there is no such issue as a lack of sugar supply in the country,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters at the Pulai MP's Hari Raya open house at Taman Rekreasi Taman Uda Utama here on Saturday (May 20).
Salahuddin said this when commenting on a picture of premium white sugar in green packaging priced at RM4.60 per kg.
“If the sugar companies wish to introduce a new product, they must get the green light from the ministry first,” he added.
Despite the price increase of raw sugar and natural gas globally, Salahuddin said that the government, through four ministries, has ensured that the people have continued to be able to purchase sugar at an affordable price.
“My ministry, together with the Economy Ministry, the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry, and the Finance Ministry, have been tasked with ensuring that the country has a sufficient and sustainable supply of sugar.
“We have also prepared an action plan to ensure we are always one step ahead in case of any changes (globally), so that locals can continue to get their sugar,” he added.
