Not a threat, says Ahmad Maslan of former Umno leaders joining Opposition

KUALA LUMPUR: The decision of some former Umno leaders and members to join Opposition parties ahead of the upcoming elections in six states has not undermined the party's strength, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan (pic).

The Umno supreme council member told Sinar Harian that those who had been sacked or suspended can choose any party to join but reminded those who were still Umno members not to be like "kacang lupakan kulit" and forget where they come from.

He also said there was talk that former Umno leaders who once held positions as ministers or deputy ministers would choose to join the Opposition in order to continue their respective political careers.

"These people had ministerial positions on Barisan Nasional and Umno tickets.

"They looked great in terms of image, but when they were not nominated, they made decisions against the party.

"Do not leave Umno just because you were not nominated.

"I hope those who want to leave the party won't do it," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Ahmad, who is the Deputy Finance Minister I, was speaking at a press conference held during an event in Johor on Friday (May 19).

It was reported that former Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa is said to be among more than 10 former Umno leaders who have filled out application forms to join PAS.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said that former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, meanwhile, had shown interest in joining Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

He said an announcement on the acceptance of the membership of the political figures was expected to be made at the end of this month.
