Penang cops detain nine teens over fights seen in viral video


GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained nine teenagers in connection with two fights that took place in a secondary school in Butterworth here.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said the suspects, all minors, were detained on Friday (May 19).

"The investigation officer has recorded the suspects' statements. They will be released on police bond as they are still students," he said in a brief statement on Saturday (May 20).

Comm Khaw also confirmed there were two separate fighting incidents.

He said eight suspects were students of the school while another was a dropout.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 323 of Penal Code for causing hurt and Section 147 for rioting.

He was commenting on a recent viral video of a bullying incident.

Many who commented on the video urged police to detain those responsible.
