SHAH ALAM: Former Selangor mentri besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali says he will abide by Perikatan Nasional’s decision if he is asked to contest in the coming state polls.
However, the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman said he personally does not want to contest, but there has been unofficial talks within the coalition for him to contest.
"As far as I am concerned, I have had seven terms as MP and also as a state assemblyman.
“Let the young people take over. I decided not to contest for a state seat in Selangor six months ago, and as far as I’m concerned, I am sticking to it.
“If the leadership orders me to contest, I will have to abide. There has been no official talks on this so far," said Azmin, who is Perikatan information chief.
The former Gombak MP, who lost his seat to current Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amiruddin Shari, said this to the media at the Perikatan Hari Raya open house on Sunday (May 21).
The open house was a show of force with all Malay Opposition parties coming together for the first time after their downfall in the last general election.
Hosted by the Opposition coalition, it saw the coming together of top Perikatan leaders such Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, top PAS leaders, former Umno warlords, and Parti Pejuang Tanahair leaders.
Azmin added he was confident that Selangor will fall to Perikatan in the state polls.
“This is because we have proven that we can manage the recovery of the economy.
"Selangor has a high number of educated people and mostly from the middle-class, and they can evaluate,” he added.
