Muhyiddin: ‘Abnormal’ for Umno supporters to vote for DAP

PAGOH: It is unusual when an Umno leader calls on supporters to cast their votes for DAP in the upcoming six state elections, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic).

The Perikatan Nasional chairman, who is also Bersatu president, said that during his 40 years with Umno formerly, he had never heard of such a thing and called it “something abnormal”.

“It is up to their supporters who still uphold Umno’s principles whether to listen to one of their party leaders’ awkward instruction or not,” he said.

Muhyiddin, who is also Pagoh MP, said this when met during his constituency’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri event held at the sports complex here yesterday.

He claimed that based on a study carried out by Bersatu on previous elections, including the 15th General Election (GE15), the transferability of votes to Umno and DAP never happened.

Umno, he claimed, has strayed from its original struggle and ideology when a leader wants supporters to vote for DAP.

“Umno is already on its last legs and the coming six state elections will prove it as the majority of Malays no longer support the party,” he added.

The former prime minister was asked to comment on Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan’s statement asking party supporters to cast their votes for DAP candidates in the coming state polls.

On the polls, Muhyiddin said Perikatan’s popularity among voters has increased, especially since it administered the country.

He predicted that the trend would continue and voters will judge the present government’s performance.

“The elections in the six states will become a new benchmark that will determine Malaysia’s future political path and I am confident Perikatan will get majority support from the people, especially the Malays,” he added.

Muhyiddin also said that similar to GE15, Perikatan will be using its logo in four out of the six states – Selangor, Penang, Negri Sembilan and Kedah.

“We are still awaiting feedback from PAS on which logo it will use in Kelantan and Terengganu.

“If PAS wants to use its own logo in the two states, it is not a problem as voters there already know about Perikatan,” he added.
